Traditional Taste of Kobe High Curry

There is a traditional curry called Kobe High Curry that was popular for many years at the pretigious old Oriental Hotel in Kobe. From February 1, 2023, our hotel will be offering this curry as part of the menu for dinner at Buffet & Grill QWACHI. It will be a signature menu item for buffets at 5 different facilities belonging to Oriental Hotels & Resorts. We hope you will enjoy the traditional flavor from the former Oriental Hotel which has attracted much attention over the years and was a large part of the Western food culture in Kobe.

~The food culture of Kobe continues on after the Great Hanshin Earthquake~

The former Oriental Hotel, located in the original Foreign Settlement of Kobe, was founded in 1870 as one of the oldest Western-style hotels in Japan. It moved three times before being closed due to damage caused by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. It had been loved by people as a prestigious hotel where you could enjoy the best Western cuisine and service in Japan. The traditional taste of the Kobe High Curry fascinated many people over the years. The recipe was inherited by the Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel which opened the same year as the earthquake and came with one of the chefs from the former Oriental Hotel who was appointed as the first executive chef. The traditions and flavor are maintained until today.

* The story of the name Kobe High Curry: It is said that the curry served at the former Oriental Hotel became popular among fashionable women in Kobe. The translation of the name into English changed from "curry eaten by stylish Kobe madams" to "high curry".

~How the Flavor is Created~

The most important feature of Kobe High Curry is the amount of onions which have been both sauteed and fried to bring out their sweetness. The hotel's original blend of spices is added to the carefully prepared "double onions" and creates a unique aroma and flavor. Apple preserve is used as a secret ingredient to give the curry a deep richness. The aroma of the sweetness of the onions mixed with the faint sourness of the apple preserves is followed by the spiciness at the end. The result is a unique and satisfying curry.
